You might have looked this up as soon as Lincoln Riley was hired by Mike Bohn on Thanksgiving Sunday last November, but if you didn’t, we’re here to tell you: Oklahoma averaged almost 40 points per game last season. The Sooners were just under 39 points per game heading into the Alamo Bowl against Oregon. By scoring 47 against the Ducks, the Sooners then finished the season with 508 points in 13 games for an average of 39 points.
Scoring 507 points in 13 games creates an average of exactly 39 points. The Sooners were one point above that threshold, with Caleb Williams playing most — but not all — of the season at quarterback for OU.
As the focus for Riley shifts from Oklahoma to USC, the addition of Jordan Addison gives the Trojans a real chance to field a 500-point offense. That would put USC at just under 39 points per game over a 13-game season (12 regular games plus the Pac-12 Championship Game). USC would at least like to hit 500 points this year, ideally 520, which would give the Trojans a 40-points-per-game average.
You might be wondering, “How many teams reached 500 points in college football last year?” Funny that you would ask. We have the full list below:
